What does it mean to set intentions?
First, let’s start with the difference between a “goal” and an “intention.”
A goal is a specific, measurable outcome that is something you strive for in the future.
An intention is a guiding principle for how you choose to show up. It is the driving force and motivation behind why you do something.
Your intention impacts how you act now, whereas a goal is something you aim to achieve in the future.
Why set intentions?
Intentions provide direction and help you move with purpose.
They allow you to focus on what you intend to accomplish and how you want to show up.
Intention provides a reason for doing what you do.
When do you set intentions?
Milestones such as New Year’s, birthdays, anniversaries, etc., are popular times to set intentions. But, ideally, you’d set and reinforce your intentions all the time.
For example, I set an intention for the day, every morning. Setting a daily intention allows me to move through the day with purposeful intent.
It helps me get clear on what I want to get done, how I want to feel, and how to show up that day.
How to set intentions
A daily intention practice is a key to living intentionally every day. Here’s an overview of how to set your intentions:
- Know your values and make sure your intention aligns with them.
- Identify your desired feeling. Focus on how you wish to feel instead of a specific outcome. For example, instead of “I intend to clean my apartment.” it’d be “I want to feel re-energized and inspired.”
- Ground yourself in gratitude. Express thanks for where you are and where you intend to go. Gratitude will uplift your state of being so that you can show up in a higher vibe.
- Express your intent to the universe. Write your intention down, or say it out loud. Repeat and reaffirm your intention throughout the day. Keep regrounding yourself in why you’re doing what you’re doing.
