Goal setting is important because it gives your life direction. You become aware of and define the objectives you wish to achieve.
Many people are willing to spend months planning a vacation but aren’t willing to take a day to think about their goals.
Without goal setting, many people are left to go about life mindlessly with no sense of where they’re going in life.

Why is goal setting important?
It gives your life focus and direction.
Goal setting gives you something to work towards and adds structure to your life.
You’re taking the time to visualize and plan how you’re going to reach your objective.
Defining a path also helps you better track your progress against key milestones.
You become more future thinking.
This may sound like the opposite of what you want to do when practicing mindfulness, but defining a goal helps you be more intentional with your time.
You know what you’re working towards. This enables you to choose actions that move you in a positive direction.
You become more confident.
You know what direction you’re moving in. You’re no longer mindlessly going through life.
Goal setting allows you to organize your thoughts.
It gives you peace of mind that you’re moving in the right direction towards what you want.
Your motivation increases.
A key part of setting goals is defining why you want to achieve a certain objective.
What purpose does it serve you? What is your why?
You set an intention to reach your goal and know what steps to take to be successful.
The goal is no longer a lofty unachievable thought.
You know the path to get there and have a plan to reach it!

Tips to set goals you’ll keep
Now that you know why goal setting is so important. Here are ways that you can set goals that you’ll actually keep!
- Clarify your goal. Be specific about your goals. Vague goals don’t spark the same motivation.
- Break down big goals. Define the key milestones that will put you on a direct path to reaching your goal.
- Write down actionable next steps. Map out the steps you need to take to reach each of the big milestones.
- Create deadlines and due dates. Decide when you’d like to achieve your goal and then back out a timeline for when each milestone needs to be achieved.
- Define your why. Why do you need to accomplish this goal? This will be the driving force of motivation for you when you’re struggling.
- Discipline. Stick to the deadlines you set for yourself.
- Celebrate all your wins! Reward yourself when you reach a milestone. Celebrate all the wins, big or small, in your journey.
