Mindful consumption is being thoughtful about your impact and how you spend your money.
It’s when you consider where your money goes, who it supports, how it impacts the environment, etc.
Many people don’t think their choices don’t matter in the “grand scheme of things” – but they do!
Every purchase you make directly influences company profits, which means your purchases tell companies what type of world you are willing to live in.
Why should they care about making environmentally friendly products if you, the consumer, don’t?
Your money is power, and this post will cover how you can be a more mindful consumer.

What is mindful consumption?
Mindful consumption is when you think and care deeply about what you bring into your life.
It’s when you take into consideration many factors before purchasing.
There are many ways to be a mindful consumer:
- It’s when you only allow things into your life that matter. You’re not mindlessly purchasing items just because you “got a good deal” or because it’s convenient. Everything has a purpose and adds value to your life.
- It’s when you avoid being wasteful and only buy what you need. You ask yourself what is necessary and what isn’t. You’re thoughtful about your carbon footprint and the impact you leave behind.
- It’s when you choose to limit the use of single-use waste. You try to find longer-lasting alternatives instead of resorting to regularly buying cheaper versions that will be thrown out quickly.
- It’s when you decide to shop small and support local businesses. You think about where your money goes and who it supports. You consider more than just the price point. You think about the people and their values.
- It’s when you acknowledge how things are created. Are they ethically and humanely sourced? You are thoughtful about where your money goes and ensures it doesn’t end up supporting something unethical that doesn’t align with your values.
Why is being a mindful consumer important?
Because everything you do matters, you have the power to influence how large companies shift their businesses directly.
What you purchase tells companies what’s okay and not because your purchase directly impacts their profits.
You have more power and influence than you think!
Most people think the problem is too big and that their decisions don’t matter. But, they do matter!
Small choices you make cyclically add up, and they influence what companies put out into the world.
So it’s time to start making sure your actions reflect the type of world you want to live in.
Mindful consumption tips
Here are a few tips to be a more mindful consumer:
- Be present when making purchasing decisions. Take a minute to stop and ask yourself why you’re purchasing it.
- Do your research. Is it ethically sourced? Where is your money going?
- Consider the lifespan of the item. How long will you be using it? Will it be used only once and then thrown out? If so, is there an alternative that can be reused?
- Think about the carbon footprint. What’s the impact you’re going to leave on the planet? Is there something else you could use with a smaller footprint?
- Be intentional with how you live. Start to become more mindful in your everyday life.
- Consume less. Question yourself and be curious about WHY you want something. What need is it filling?
