Are you planning a trip to Osaka, Japan? If so, you’ve probably seen the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan listed as one of the top places to visit. It’s frequently listed at the top of those lists alongside heavy hitters like the infamous Dotonbori and Universal Studios Japan. Why is that, you ask?
Well, today, I am going to show you what it’s like at one of Japan’s largest aquariums and help you answer the question: “Is it worth a visit??” Let’s dive in!
Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan Overview
Osaka Aquarium is home to 30,000 creatures and 600 species, including the popular whale sharks, manta rays, jellyfish, and tiger sharks.
The aquarium lets you experience the wonder of the Pacific Rim and the aquatic animals that live there by recreating the natural environment of their habitats.
It is one of the largest aquariums in the world and one of Osaka’s premiere destinations because of its large, vibrant, and lively tanks.
How much time do you need at Osaka Aquarium?
You can get through the aquarium in a couple of hours, depending on how long you spend at each exhibit.
It makes for a fun half-day out in Osaka.
How do you get to the Osaka Aquarium?
The Osaka Aquarium is located in the port area by Osaka Bay.
It sits next to the Legoland Discovery Center Osaka and is also close to where Universal Studios Japan is located.
You can get to the aquarium in 30 minutes easily by train from either Shin-Osaka station, JR Osaka station, or Namba station.
When’s the best time of the day to visit?
Because of how popular the aquarium is, I recommend going earlier in the day to avoid the crowds.
Or, if you go after 5 pm, there’s a special night viewing experience!
For opening days and hours, check the aquarium website as the calendar may change due to different circumstances.
Ticket costs and how to purchase them
Tickets are timed entry, and it’s recommended you purchase them prior to arriving at the aquarium. This way, you can ensure you get your preferred time slot.
You can either purchase tickets directly from the aquarium’s website where you will need to make an account to pay for the ticket.
Or, you can purchase tickets from Klook, which I’ll leave a link to in the description box below.
Once you arrive at the aquarium, you can either show a printed copy of the tickets or the QR code on your smartphone.
Ticket prices range depending on age:
- 2700 yen for ages 16 years and over
- 1400 yen for ages 7-15
- 700 yen for ages 3-6
- Free for ages 2 and under

Why is Osaka Aquarium famous?
The Osaka Aquarium is a huge space known for its innovative habitats and presentations to show and learn more about the creatures of the Pacific.
The main, and in my opinion, the best part of the aquarium is the humongous central tank, which measures 34 meters across and 9 meters deep. You can view the tank from various angles on different floors.
It is where the famous whale sharks are located alongside other amazing creatures like the spinetail devil rays, hammerhead sharks, school of fish, and more!
Seeing all the amazing creatures up close and personal and coexisting next to each other was absolutely breathtaking to see.
Additional ways to get the most out of your time at the aquarium…
Visitors can listen to stories of marine animal behaviors by renting Audio Guides from the service counter at the aquarium.
The rental fee is 800 yen, and it is available in six languages: Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, French, and Thai.
Another learning experience available is the potential to see the animals getting fed. During these feeding sessions, you can see the animals engage in training sessions designed to keep them healthy and stimulated.
Is the aquarium in Osaka worth it?
That’s up to you. For me, it was worth it. It reinvigorated my love for marine life and made for a really fun, unique activity during our time in Osaka.
I hope this gave you insight into what it’s like at the aquarium to help you decide whether it’s worth adding to your Japan travel itinerary.
