Colds are never fun, and the symptoms can be quite annoying (and disgusting).
Over-the-counter medicines are good at masking the problem, but they don’t get to the root of the problem.
That’s why in this blog, we’re going to go over nine cold remedies that will help get your body back into fighting shape. So, let’s get into it!
For more on how to stay healthy this season:
1. Drink lots of water
First things first – you need to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water throughout the day. Water is cleansing and keeps things moving throughout your body to ensure that it functions properly to fight off the bad. Staying hydrated also helps loosen mucus and can help relieve congestion.
2. Get lots of sleep
You’ll probably naturally feel tired because your body is using energy to fight off the sickness. Support your body in its efforts by getting lots of rest so that your body can recharge and recover.
Use this time to slow down and listen to your body. If your body is telling you to slow down, then listen to it. Don’t fight it.
3. Eat soup
Soup, in general, is comforting to eat during the colder fall and winter months. But, chicken noodle soup is especially great when you’re sick because it’s soothing for your throat and filled with nutrients.
The warm broth can also help loosen mucus and relieve congestion.
4. Eat garlic
Many people use garlic to help prevent a cold and lessen the symptoms. This is because garlic has potent antimicrobial, antiviral and antibiotic properties.
Raw garlic is spicy and stimulates mucus flow to help with decongestion.
5. Drink warm liquids
Warm drinks are another way to stay hydrated. They help relieve nasal congestion, soothe your throat, and get the toxins moving out of your body.
Adding honey to your tea or water can also help soothe your throat.
6. Take a steamy shower
Steam can help relieve stuffiness and congestion by thinning the mucus in your sinuses. In other words, taking a steamy shower can help you breathe a little better! Just try not to stay in there too long, or else you’ll tucker yourself out.
7. Gargle with salt water
This is ALWAYS the first thing my mom tells me to do whenever I get sick, or my throat is scratchy. Gargling with salt water works because the salt pulls out the mucus from your swollen and inflamed throat.
So, the next time you have a sore throat (or are trying to prevent one), mix ¼ to ½ teaspoons of salt with warm water. Stir until salt is dissolved and then gargle.
8. Add moisture to the air with a humidifier
Cold symptoms can make it hard to breathe and make your throat feel dry and scratchy.
Adding moisture to the air with a humidifier can make it easier for air to pass through your nasal, throat, and lung passages. The added moisture is also kinder to your sore throat.
9. Stay comfy
Time to snuggle up in some blankets and get comfortable! Your body will be working in overdrive, trying to get you better, so don’t go running around trying to do a lot right now.
Support your body by allowing it to focus its efforts on healing. So, rest up and stay comfy so you can be back on your feet in no time!
One last reminder
Please stay at home if you are not feeling well and wear a mask if you absolutely have to be out in public. With the coronavirus and flu season among us, we want to be extra vigilant in preventing the spread of germs.
Also, please make sure to see your doctor if:
- symptoms that last more than ten days
- symptoms that are severe or unusual
- if your child is younger than three months of age and has a fever or is lethargic
- You should also call your doctor right away if you are at high risk for serious flu complications and get flu symptoms such as fever, chills, and muscle or body aches
Take care and be safe, everyone!
