10 Morning Habits
Don’t hit the snooze button
This first one is so simple but so important!. Waking up to your alarm right away shows discipline.
It’s you choosing yourself as your first act of the day, and that’s empowering!
Tongue scraping
The first thing I do every morning is scrape my tongue. Scraping your tongue eliminates toxins that may have built up in my mouth overnight.
Tongue scraping is part of a typical Ayurvedic morning routine that removes debris and dead skin cells from your tongue. It also massages your internal organs, which promotes overall digestive and oral health. It’s super easy to do and very satisfying!
Here’s a link to the one tongue scrapers I got off Amazon. As you can see, scrapers are pretty affordable! Once you start, you can’t NOT do this first thing in the morning. I will never go back!
Water
Up to 60% of the human body and 73% of our brains are made of water (U.S. Geological Survey article: The Water in You). You lose a lot of water while sleeping, so it’s important to rehydrate your body in the morning.
Drinking water can help with digestion and can jump-start your day in the right direction.
Organifi
I drink Organifi Green Juice every morning to get my daily superfoods.
I’m not sponsored or an affiliate. I just honestly love this product and the company.
I love this product because it helps me optimize my mornings—no need to spend time and energy blending a smoothie or juicing.
Organifi Green Juice is gently dried superfoods in powder form, and all you have to do is mix with water (I recommend getting a shaker bottle).
And my absolute favorite part about this product is that it tastes good without the extra added sugar! I love when you can read the ingredients of a product and know exactly what you’re putting in your body.
Exercise
There’s no shortage of science, articles, people, etc. telling you how great exercise is for your overall health.
Personally, forcing myself to work out (see the language I’m using here lol) in the morning can be a STRUGGLE.
BUT! I try to incorporate some movement in the morning, no matter what. It can be a heart-pumping HIIT workout or a quick 5-10 minute yoga/stretch sequence.
The point is to get your body moving!
Meditate or Practice Stillness
Dedicate some time in the morning to your mind. Use this time to reflect and clear your head.
If you tend to stress yourself out thinking about the day ahead, use this time to silence your mind intentionally.
Meditation and practicing stillness relax me and remind me that I’m in control of my thoughts and feelings.
Journal
Writing down your thoughts in the morning is another way to reset your mind. It allows you to release, organize, and reflect on your ideas.
Take the time to visualize how you want the day to go or envision what your dream life is.
Light a fire within yourself by imagining and feeling what it’d be like to reach your goals.

Read
Try to dedicate at least 15 minutes reading self-improvement or a motivational book in the morning.
Anything that will get you motivated and in the right mindset for the rest of the day.
Why read in the morning? Because it gives you inspiration and potential ideas to implement throughout the day.
It also is 15 minutes to slow down and focus solely on improving your mindset.
20 minutes of focus towards a goal
Dedicate at least 20 minutes of deep work and concentration on a goal. When you do this, you’ll feel good about the day regardless of what else happens during the day because you’ll have at least made some moves towards your goal.
It allows you to check that box at the start of your day.
Podcast while getting ready
Podcasts are great because you can listen to them while getting ready for the day.
Listen to something that puts you in a positive state at the beginning of your day.
Stay away from the news until after your morning routine to keep your mornings solely for self-care.
If you’re looking for podcast recommendations, here are a few that I listen to in the mornings:
- The Model Health Show
- Mind Love
- Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness
- The Lavendaire Lifestyle
- Oprah’s Super Soul Conversations
- Unlocking Us by Brene Brown

How to Start a Morning Routine
The idea of a morning routine can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be!
The beauty of morning routines is that it is YOUR TIME.
You are setting aside time in the morning to take care of yourself so that you can head into the day fresh and ready to go.
And because it is YOUR TIME, you can create whatever type of routine feels best for you on any given day. You’re the boss here.
Again, the beauty of all these morning habits is that the amount of time you spend on each is flexible!
You could only spend 5-15 minutes on each habit and still get the benefits (and feeling of accomplishment).
We’re aiming for progress and becoming more intentional with our mornings. Not perfection.
Here are some questions to ask yourself as you start to craft your perfect morning routine:
- What is my current morning routine?
- Am I intentional with what I do when I wake up?
- Is there something I wish I had more time for that I could work on at the start of my day?
- What tweaks can I make to my current routine to maximize my mornings?
