This can save you money if you plan to journey all around Japan during your stay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, you&#8217;ll learn whether a JR Pass is worth it time-saver!).\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many sites to purchase Japan Rail Passes, but I recommend buying from either:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/japanrailpass.net\/en\/purchase.html#step_01\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1586\">Official Japan Railway Website<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><a data-lasso-id=\"1587\" href=\"https:\/\/klook.tp.st\/4kJfv6ms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\">Klook<\/a> &#8211; the easiest in my experience and offers the best deal (most of the time!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JR Passes can be activated up to three months after the issue date. Once you activate the pass in Japan, you can choose a start date up to 30 days from activation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once in Japan, you will pick up your pass at a JR ticket office (&#8220;JR Travel Service Center&#8221;). Note that you must present passports for all Japan Rail Pass holders.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I need to buy a JR Pass?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Short answer? <strong>You do NOT always need to purchase a JR Rail Pass<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan Rail passes can be a cost-effective way to travel through Japan. However, starting in October 2023, pass prices increased by 70%, making the pass&#8217;s cost-saving benefit no longer worthwhile for <em>most<\/em> travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example: Only making a roundtrip from Tokyo to Osaka (or Kyoto)? ? The pass <em>won&#8217;t<\/em> be worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s also worth noting that the pass does not cover all Shinkansen services, such as the Mizuho and Nozomi lines (the Nozomi line is the fastest in the country and can shave off significant travel time). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some privately owned lines, such as the Odakyu Express, are also not covered by the JR rail pass.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2728&nbsp;<\/strong>You can use this&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.japan-guide.com\/railpass\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1588\">JR Pass calculator<\/a>&nbsp;to see if a Japan Rail Pass is worth it for your trip.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I travel in Japan without a JR Pass?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you choose <em>not<\/em> to purchase a JR Pass<\/strong>, you can still ride JR trains and the Shinkansen. You will just need to buy tickets individually for each trip.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can purchase your Shinkansen tickets either at the station, through the app or&nbsp;<a data-lasso-id=\"1589\" href=\"https:\/\/klook.tp.st\/sJCdEUOX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\">online<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Recommendation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t recommend purchasing a JR Pass unless you plan to make multiple longer trips within a short timeframe. (Again, use the <a data-lasso-id=\"4280\" href=\"https:\/\/www.japan-guide.com\/railpass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JR Pass calculator<\/a> to see if it&#8217;ll be worth it for your trip.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recommend exploring area or regional passes to see if you can get discounts on travel and local activities, shops, and restaurants (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/klook.tp.st\/V8zrbKsz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"4281\">the Nikko area pass<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But again, these are only worth it if you plan to jam-pack your schedule. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2728 Insider Tip: Reserving Shinkansen Seats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love how there&#8217;s an option to purchase and reserve seats for JR, Shinkansen, and Limited Express trains online.
