My name is Remi and this is my adoption story. <\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does family mean to an adoptee? An adoptee is someone who is adopted or legally made the son or daughter of someone other than their birth parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m a transnational adoptee. I was adopted from Japan and grew up in Los Angeles, CA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adoption affects your whole world. It affects your environment, how you\u2019re raised, the people in your life. And for me, you can add the complexity of growing up a minority female in America.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Every adoptee\u2019s story is different.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m sharing my adoption story to give you more insight into who I am and to share the perspective of an adult adoptee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mainstream media tends to highlight the adoptive parent\u2019s side but rarely explores the complicated adoptee or birth parent\u2019s side.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So you rarely hear about how it affects their worldview, personality, emotional triggers, and how they love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adoption stories are complicated, and there is so much I want to share with you. They\u2019re both Japanese American, and they <em>LITERALLY<\/em> look like me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s like the universe made me in the form of them but accidentally put me in another person\u2019s body. It\u2019s crazy!<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I never questioned that I was their child. I never felt the need to learn more about who my birth parents were because my parents were\u2026my parents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They loved (and still love ;)) me so hard, so I didn\u2019t think I needed or wanted anyone else in my life. I\u2019m fortunate in that way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There are only two times I ever think about being adopted:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When I have to leave the \u201cfamily history\u201d section blank in new patient forms at the doctor\u2019s office<\/li><li>Family holiday parties&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The complexity of family<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one in my family is blood-related to me. I don\u2019t know my family health history, like what diseases I\u2019m prone to or what characteristics my future kids may inherit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My parents got divorced, and my mom remarried, so I\u2019m fortunate to have three sides of the family to see during the holidays!<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one treats me differently. Family is family, and we all support, accept, and love each other unconditionally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>To me, family members are people who choose to be in your life.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This idea of family is a blessing and a curse because there are times where you feel like an outsider.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That you were \u201caccepted\u201d and \u201cwelcomed\u201d into the family instead of being born into it.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That you being in their life is a choice with no obligation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know these thoughts are irrational. The only time I think of them is during the holidays at big family gatherings when you can see the family resemblance permeating the room.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wonder if other adoptees feel this way because how I feel has nothing to do with how my family treats me. I absolutely, 100000% know that they love me and that I AM FAMILY.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like I said in the intro, adoption is complicated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chosen family<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Family members are people who choose to be in your life. They\u2019re the ones who love you unconditionally, no matter what.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one in my family is blood-related to me, making my close friends just as much family as my adopted family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an adoptee, there\u2019s an underlying understanding that everything is a choice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allows me to cherish and love everyone who decides to be in my life even more because I know they made a conscious choice to be there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Family is more than DNA. It\u2019s defined by love.&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Everything happens for a reason.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although there can be isolating moments, I believe that being adopted made me trust the process of life more. It helped me fully understand that everything happens for a reason.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was meant to be in this family, living this life. I don\u2019t question who my family is or why they\u2019re in my life. They\u2019re just supposed to be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the way the cookie crumbled, and I\u2019m so grateful!<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Family is complicated whether you\u2019re adopted or not. I am forever grateful for my family, my life, and my parents who chose me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know that I am loved, and that is my biggest blessing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s next?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This concludes the first part of the \u201cMy Adoption Story\u201d series!
